There I was, giving a presentation at a business meeting, when out of the blue a friend of mine looked at me from across the room and said, “Ben, I say this with all the love in my heart for you man, but you're fat, and you’ve got to get back into shape.”

Ouch. It hurt, but it wasn’t unexpected. Even so, in that moment as I sat there, I just wanted to crawl under the table and hide...

A few days earlier, I had made a quick stop to the Target to grab a few shirts – I wanted some baggier clothes because I was embarrassed that I had put on so much weight since the last time our business group got together.

After hurting myself in my last adventure race, I had slowed my workouts down significantly - to be totally honest with you, I was skipping workouts and had gotten sloppy on my diet. I had put on 35 pounds in the three months between that race and the meeting.

When my friend said that, the room went silent. He probably said what everyone was thinking.

I lowered my head and sighed a long sigh. As my head tilted forward toward my chest, I was only able to say, “You’re right.”

A few days later, I found myself sitting in front of my computer screen.

It was like a bad dream. I sat there under the glow of my desk lamp with the latest information on fat loss. After about 10 minutes of reading, I placed my head gently on top of the stack of papers. My eyes were burning and I could feel my jaws starting to clinch. My pulse started to pick up. I felt like I was having a panic attack, like the ones I used to get in college when I was studying for finals.

You see books and programs that are touting the newest 'revolution' in workout design and weight loss products that sound to good to be true (they usually are).


And even when you get solid, reliable information, it's often without context, discussion or any direction on how to actually use the information in your day-to-day lives.

Let me ask you a quick question.

It's literally hundreds of pages of dense material. I'm a well-educated person, and I want to jump out of a window after the first page. And the thing is, way too many programs out there - probably even the last on you bought - sound like text books.

I spent four years at Yale, learning from some of the best economists, statisticians and mathematicians in the world. Yet, on the day I sat down at my desk the first time and rolled my chair under my keyboard, I realized that I was in trouble.

I didn't need to know the theory behind a particular formula or statistical test. It didn't matter that I could do a proof and show that the particular equation worked.

"Here's what you're going to do. You're going to take a picture of yourself every single day and send it to this group. They're going to support you. You're going to transform and it's going to be awesome!"

I looked back at my coach and gave him a fake smile. On the surface, it sounded like a brilliant idea. What better way to demonstrate the power of Metabolic Mayhem?

But I've never been one for taking pictures of myself to start with. And now? Taking a picture of me shirtless and sending it to a group of people that I barely know? This couldn't really be happening, could it?

My heart felt like it was going to pound out of my chest and I could feel my face and neck getting warmer.

My stomach churned as I uploaded the picture. It only took a few seconds, but it seemed to take forever... But once it was uploaded, something amazing happened. The support come in. A trickle at first. Then a flood.

But something else happened as well. I became accountable to the group. I knew that if I didn't post my picture (and make progress) each day, they would call me to the carpet. And I wasn't going to let that happen.

But then, I sat down at my desk to lay out my plan... and the panic, confusion and frustration flooded in. 

Luckily for me, I met the swimmer...


Have you heard any of this before?


  • Don’t eat carbs. And then, don’t eat fat. Go Paleo. Oops, I mean vegetarian.
  • Do interval training. Wait, I mean, use finishers.
  • Don’t exercise in the morning before breakfast, except when you should exercise before breakfast.
  • Do long cardio. But wait, long cardio will kill you. If you run 97 miles per day. Do you run that much?
  • Don’t forget to hit the fat burning zone. On the elliptical. I mean bike. While lifting weights and doing hand stand pushups.

It's more than enough to keep you disoriented, bewildered, and hopelessly confused.

Rather than spending your time taking action and shedding fat, you're constantly second-guessing yourself and jumping form program to program. And all that does is cause you more stress. More frustration. And more confusion.

I know how you feel.

There I was, reading about fat loss and hormones and calories and carb cycling... and at the same time, trying to figure out what to do when. My mind kept flashing back and forth to plowing through 100's of research papers that seemed to be studies in contradictions over 7 years ago when I first discovered the secrets of the Metabolic Mayhem method.

Like many of you, I spend more than a couple of hours in my car each day, sitting in traffic and shuffling my kids here and there - to school, to swim practice, to t-ball and birthday parties (who knew there were so many birthday parties!) - and then sitting in traffic coming and going from work.

And, in the time when I'm in the car alone, I do some of my best thinking.

And on this particular morning, I was thinking about what the swimmer had said. He didn't know the physics behind why he went slower or faster, he just knew that when he followed the plan he was given, he got faster. He set world records. He won Olympic medals. When he followed the plan, he became different and amazing.

I wasn't sure why yet, but that statement "just follow the plan" kept bouncing like a rubber ball around in my head.


Later that evening, it became crystal clear. It was like someone had ripped my analog, fuzzy television and replaced with a brand new, 70-inch high definition LED model.

Here's what happened.

I was doing a little research online, and I came across a statement that I'd seen before, but had paid little attention to. It was a disclaimer that basically said,

I read it again.

I felt a jolt of electricity flow through me as my brain kicked into high gear.

Now, it all came together in my mind. As it did, I relaxed. I wasn't studying for a fat loss test. I didn't need a refresher course on the ins and outs of lipolysis, leptin, adrenaline or kinesiology in order to shed my newly found fat. I'm already a certified personal and metabolic trainer.
