Before I lost over 100 pounds, I spent a lot of time bouncing from program to program. I purchased a lot of books (online and off) on fat loss.

It was 2001. I remember it clearly. In 3 months I would be marrying the love of my life.
And, like a lot of people who are heading down the isle, I decided that it was time to get back into shape.
I walked into the gym and signed up for a membership. After filling out the paperwork, I walked over to the scale and stepped on. I knew I'd gained weight, but what happened next shocked me.
I slid the weights across the bars. 200. 225. 250. The weight crept higher. 275. 300.
When the scale finally balanced, it read 312 pounds.

That anxiety infested every part of my life.
Even on the day of my wedding, when I knew that all eyes would be on my beautiful wife, that voice in my head kept gnawing at me.
"They're wondering what such a beautiful woman sees in such an out-of-shape mess."
No matter how much I tried to get rid of those thoughts, they just wouldn't go away.
It even got to the point where I was embarrassed to go out in public. You might know what I'm talking about?
Not just embarrassed eating, or swimming, plain embarrassed... existing. I hated feeling that way.
These feelings are what started me down the path of jumping from workout to workout. Buying and testing programs and gadgets that promised the world but never delivered.

For several years I fell into the yoyo trap and my weight bounced up and down like a roller coaster I couldn’t get off of. Every program I tried contradicted the one before it. Each a little more complicated than the next. Each promising to fix what I accidentally broke with the previous program.

Yet, I was born stubborn. As I said before, I refused to quit.
I Was Determined to Find A Solution
Fast forward a few months.
We'd just had our first baby - a boy named Cameron. Cameron had motivated me to give it another shot, and I was excited. I wanted to have enough energy to run around and play with my son.
I found what I thought looked like a great workout program to follow. and on the last week of my paternity leave I started putting it to work.
It was my first day back at work, and it was a typically long day at the office. I was getting home right around sun down that evening. I raced in the house, grabbed my shoes, and went upstairs to the bedroom to get my gym clothes.
As I bent over to pull my shoes on, my wife startled me. I hadn't seen her sitting there, holding Cameron.
"How was your day?" she asked, as she rocked back and forth.
We talked for a minute about our days, and then I returned to my shoes.
"I'm going to run to the gym to get my workout in," I said.
"You're going to skip bedtime?"
My heart sank. I hadn't thought of it. "No, I'm not."
I stared down at my untied shoe. I could feel a knot forming in my stomach, and a lump in my throat. Again, I felt defeated.
As I said at the beginning of this report, I just felt tired.
What was I going to do? What could I do?
Then Something Happened That Rocked Me to My Very Core.
After putting Cameron to bed with my wife, and an hour or so of reflection, I decided to call the support line for the program I had started the week before.
This workout program had hyped itself as the ultimate workout solution for busy people. So I thought maybe they had some advice.
I spent a few minutes talking to a very nice lady. I explained my situation, and she empathized.
And then she asked me if I'd like to speak to the "expert" who created the program.
Sure! I was pretty excited to be getting some expert advice.
I repeated my story to him. I explained that I was working 60 hours a week and that I had a newborn at home. I just needed some guidance on how to make the program work for me.
And his response literally rocked me to my core.
Here's what he said.
"I'm going to say two things. First, it's obvious that losing weight is not a priority for you. You're just being lazy."
I could feel my face turning red and my heart race as the anger built.
"Second, this program is 100% backed by science, and it works for everyone that's not to lazy to put in the effort."
And that was that. That's what the fitness "professionals" really think about you and me. They've got science on their side, so the problem is clearly with us.
In the span of 30 seconds, he'd called my lazy twice. And what exactly did he want me to prioritize the workout over?
Did he want me to prioritize it over my job? Over my family?
Yet, there was something else that bothered me even more. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, yet it was there in my head, lingering.
The Answer Literally
Woke Me Right Out of My Sleep!
As I laid in bed that night and stared at the ceiling in silence, I thought about all of the diets and workout programs I'd tried over the last few years. I looked at the good points and bad points of each.
Yet, something just didn’t feel right. They were all too complex and results always seemed out of reach.
Why was it that not one of the workouts and diets I tried actually worked? Why did this self proclaimed “expert” simply call me lazy rather than try to find a solution to my problem?
These questions occupied my mind as I fell to sleep that night.
Then, at 3AM, I sat straight up in bed as if someone poured a gallon of Ice cold water on me.
I knew that I wasn't lazy. I graduated in 4 years from Yale University. I had a family I loved and a successful career. Lazy I wasn't.
I also knew that I wasn't going to sacrifice time with my family or my career.
I woke up realizing that those comments came from a trainer who works in a gym. And when exercise is in your job description, it's easy to pass judgement on the rest of us, no matter how far-sighted that belief is.
They don't get people like us, and that's fine. But...
No, it was something else that had me full of energy at that ungodly hour.
The needle that stuck in my mind was that he offered no help whatsoever. And the reason he didn’t was because he didn’t know how to help someone like me... or like you.
He had his one training method which was rooted in “science” and if you didn’t fit into his mold, then there was no helping you.
Having studied at an ivy league school, I realized that most, if not all of the trainers selling fitness programs fell into this category.
They claimed to have scientific evidence to support their programs, but in reality were just acting as parrots, repeating what they heard from the very few actually qualified exercise experts while not really understanding anything they are saying.
Think about it... Why would a real expert have to resort to calling someone lazy and insulting them? A real expert would help solve the problem, not make it worse by making you feel bad.
Well... That’s exactly what I decided to do...
Heart racing, I went downstairs and fired up the computer. I stayed up for the rest of the night. And by the time the sun came up and I needed to get ready to go into work, I knew I was on to something.
That day, I went into work tired, but still excited. I told one of my mentors at work about my experience with the know-it-all expert, and about my "ah-ha" moment at 3AM.
He looked at me and smiled.
"You know what you have to do, right?" His eyes narrowed slightly. "Do what you're good at. You know in your mind that it's not as hard as everyone tries to make it. So, do some research. Look at it from a different angle. And then... make it simple."
I spent the next few weeks researching. I was excited. And what I found out, changed my life.
Let me ask you this.
Have You Ever Seen or Heard of Any of These Fat Loss "Methods"?
- Don't eat carbs.
- Do interval training.
- Don't exercise in the morning before breakfast.
- Long cardio will literally KILL you.
- Exercise in the fat burning zone.
- Eat a Paleo diet.
- Calories don't matter, and even if they did, not all calories are created equal.
- Have a cheat day every 7 days. Or is it 5 days? Maybe just one meal. Sometimes.
- You gotta do Tabata.
- Don't eat fat.
- Intervals are dead. Do finishers instead.
- You should exercise in the morning before breakfast.
- Slow cardio is the only way to burn fat, but be sure you're doing enough of it.
- Lifting heavy weights is the only to REALLY melt fat.
- Calories are ALL that matter.
- Journal everything and start a blog with pictures of all of your food.
- Fast every 7 days. Sometimes for two days in a row.

Contradicting, Conflicting and CONFUSING
Advice is "Based on Science"?
It's amazing. If you spend any time researching fat loss like I have over the years, you realize a few things about scientific studies.
- Many of the studies are small - fewer than 20 people - and are single gender (men or women, not men AND women). Hardly a representative sample of the population.
- The scientists focus on a very small aspect of weight loss - a very specific type of exercise or an extremely specific nutrition plan with carefully measured portions - while doing their best to hold everything else constant. This is great for science, but how well can YOU hold everything constant in YOUR life?
- More often than you'd think, the study being cited by the expert that "validates" their programs actually has nothing at all to do with weight loss! (see the box at right)
If You've Been Confused about Losing Weight... Listen Closely.
The fitness industry is extremely crowded. There are hundreds of programs out there competing for your time and money. And all of them are using these studies to come up with what's called their "hook" - the thing that they can use to get you to buy their program.
And with each new study that comes out, they are inching farther and farther away from what's called the critical few things that science actually knows for certain work for fat loss.
They're ignoring this foundation to always be on the cutting edge, and they're doing it all while claiming that science is on their side.
It's like they're putting the shingles on the roof of the house when they haven't even put the foundation down. It's completely backwards.
And while they argue amongst themselves about which workout is best or which type of food is in vogue or what a caveman would have eaten, using studies to contradict one another, what are you left with?
Simple... you're left to hope that the next over-hyped plan is the magic bullet it claims to be.
That's the problem when it comes to trying to lose weight. You're being told to do all of these different, contradicting, confusing things. And so you end up with 15 different nutrition and workout programs that don't go together.
The fact is that so many opinions and all that "expertise" can be confusing and frustrating.

Think about that for a moment. Now close your eyes and try to remember the last program you completed before moving on to the next one, or before trying to integrate another set of workouts or a new diet strategy you found online somewhere.
Be completely honest.
If you've completed one recently, congratulations! You're one of the few.
The fact is that most of us haven't. I was in that bucket. And, your online fitness experts know that most people don't finish what they start.
Yet, you are getting bombarded with new program after new program filled with twists on old concepts and tips and tricks so keep you bouncing around.

I did a survey recently, and by far the number one answer was "so I would have to go to the gym."

No, instead, they had carefully designed plans. They didn't need to think about what to eat or when. And they didn't have to wonder what exercises to do in what order and for how long.
The confusion was eliminated.
They hardly had to think at all because it was all done for them.
No matter what variable was being studied, nutrition or exercise, the participants had a clear plan on what to do to see the results that scientists were after.
And, until now, this is where the online "experts" have failed. Not because they don't want to. But because it's hard to do.
This is the simple framework of every successful weight loss study on the planet.
I used what I learned from those studies and then I simplified it down into a flexible system that was sustainable over the long term. That way I could guarantee you the best chance of finally sticking to the plan sot that you get the results you deserve.
In order to do that, when I created the program that helped me loss over 100 pounds, I created a program that would work in the "real world".

The secret that I was perfectly suited to discover, that I;m going to reveal to you right now, came from an Italian economist named Vilfredo Paretto in 1906. This principal changed the way I look at diet and exercise which resulted in me losing 102lbs and completely changing my life.
I’ll also share with you another principal from 1347 written by William of Ockham that makes it obvious what you’ve been doing wrong and how to fix it...
Let’s dig in...
Principle 1: Your Program Must Focus on Less By Focusing ONLY on What's Best for YOU
The easiest way to simplify weight loss is to focus on less stuff. Sounds simple enough, right?
However, we need to figure out what the right stuff to focus on actually is. That's where something called the Pareto Principle comes in.
It's more commonly know as the "80-20 Rule" and basically says that approximately 80% of your results (in our case weight loss), come from only 20% of the things you do.
A simple example of this would be to look at what you're eating during the day. If you wrote everything down and then back and looked at it, you can identify the 20% of the foods your eating that are keeping you from losing weight.
Here's what tends to happen. People want to focus their time on programs that are really designed to help you reach "elite" fitness. To help you drop the last 5 pounds, not the first 5.
And what happens when you don't see the results you want because you're starving yourself or you get injured trying to do the latest "functional" training program.
Trust me, I've been there.
The new crazy “lose weight quick” diets based on specific timing of certain foods (too complicated).
Weight loss pills, "magic Chinese herbs" or "banned" supplements that lead to little if any results and are possibly harmful (too dangerous).
And insane exercise programs that only clearly provide a warning that says "you have to be in pretty damn good shape to do this program. If that's not you, buy our simpler program." (just plain scammy).
I'd much rather use less effort and focus on the 20% of the stuff that's going to get me the results I'm looking for, wouldn't you?
Now, let me ask you this:
Principle 2: Your Program Must Be As Simple As Possible, But No Simpler
Ockham's Razor is a principle named after this very cool guy from the 14th-century. Franciscan friar William of Ockham understood that often times, the best solution to anything is to simplify it.
Yet, contrary to popular belief, Ockham's Razor doesn't say "the simplest solution is usually best."
Instead, it says, "entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity". This simply means things should only be as complicated as they need to be, but no more.
Unfortunately, you don't see it applied in the weight loss industry. People - and especially the "gurus" - look for complex explanations to something that seems to me, to be straight forward.
That's why you see fancy new diet programs and insane workouts popping up everywhere. It doesn't need to be that hard. From a sales standpoint, it's easier to sell flashy than it is to sell results.
Now, before you start thinking I'm going to tell you the magic is in calories in versus calories out, let me stop you. Yes, this is the simplest explanation.
However, your experience tells you that it's not quite that simple, right? After all, you've plateaued before, and then cut even more calories or cranked up the workout and the scale refused to cooperate. Am I right?
The key is to make it as simple as possible, but not simpler. When you do that, you can move mountains.
And I am going to show you how you can do that in the next section.
