That night I knew it... I knew it with a certainty that ripped my heart from it's foundations and choked my throat with panic.

That Night Everything Came Crashing Down Around Me

I bent down to tie my sneakers.

Even though it was the middle of the summer here in the south, my bedroom was cool, dark and quiet. The "new baby" smell was hanging in the air (yes, newborn's have a certain smell that is just kind of intoxicating).

However, I had just arrived home late from work and was rushing around, trying to get ready to go to the gym.

As I pulled the laces tight, my wife's voice broke the darkness.

“You’re going to miss bedtime?” Our 3-month-old was in my wife’s arms as she spoke.

I let out a sigh. “I just have to do something to lose this fat…” my words trailed off as I spoke.

I was exhausted after a week of work, trying to help with our new son, running around to trying to get to the gym, and fighting massive carb cravings.

I sat and thought for a moment to gather my thoughts.

I could see on my wife's face and hear in her voice that she was tired too. She was frustrated with me. And it was completely understandable.

It seemed that I was failing at everything. I knew that I wanted to look better for my wife. She deserved that much.

And I needed more energy to be able to keep up with the growing demands of work and now, fatherhood.

And I needed to get healthy so that when my son was old enough to play sports, I could keep up without feeling like my chest was going to explode.

Yet, my weight was pulling all of that apart.

I didn't see the gym that night. Instead, I stayed home and helped give Cameron a bath before singing him a lullaby and tucking him in safe and warm for the night.
